Art Journaling in Edinburgh with Tammy Gilley and Jane Bumar

Join Feature Artist Tammy Gilley and Sketch Strolling founder Jane Bumar in Edinburgh, the ancient and magical capital of Scotland!

September 6-13, 2025

Travelling as an artist is different than a regular tourist vibe. Artists really mean it when we talk about seeking out the journey - not just the destination. We savor the essence of our surroundings and seek deeper connections. We want a blend of classroom instruction, ample studio time and ‘boots on the ground time.’ Why go all the way to Scotland to spend all your time in a studio (even if it has gorgeous, utterly unique Victorian vibes!)

We crave experiencing the real places we’ve maybe only dreamed of. We also need to breathe the air in the quiet, pastoral countryside, feel what it’s like to tread ancient cobblestones and meander in quaint villages.

My own deep need whilst traveling as an artist also includes the freedom to curate my own adventures. In the Sketch Strolling Art Journaling experience, you’ll enjoy opportunities to bond with friends while maintaining the freedom for solo explorations, striking a balance between community and individuality.

Your Scottish art journaling experience includes:

  • Class time with Feature Artist Tammy Gilley

    • Five art instruction and open studio sessions with Tammy as we collage & create in our handmade vintage art journals - your suitcase of travel memories.

  • Sketchstrolling with Jane Bumar

    • Two all new Sketch Strolls! We’ll visit the most charming, local lanes and markets of Edinburgh for inspiration, and immerse ourselves in Outlander locations as we sketch and stroll our way through history.

Travel

  • Two days exploring ancient villages, waterfalls and autumn scenery in a luxury private vehicle, featuring kilted Scotsman Brian Collie - owner of Personal Tours of Scotland himself! For those who’ve met him before, you know he’s the best in the Scottish tour guiding business, and he’s only guiding for Sketchstrolling - the authentic Scottish art tour experience!

  • One week Edinburgh Transportation pass - empower your curiosity and feel savvy during your own exploration time.

  • Enjoy a private guided tour of Edinburgh's Royal Mile including the Harry Potter-famous Victoria Street and Greyfriars Kirkyard.

Meals & Drinks

  • Two authentic Scottish dinners at historic venues

  • Afternoon tea in an elegant hotel with dainty sandwiches, pastries, scones, cakes and tea

  • Pints and Tunes night - enjoy traditional Scottish music in a 200-year old pub

Exploration time

  • Plentiful free time to explore and go at your own pace. Plus, you'll be equipped with helpful tips and knowledge on vintage shopping, quaint bookshops, art supplies, & great in-the-know ideas (from actual locals!)

2024 Scotland & England with Mindy Lacefield

Cherry blossoms fill the air, magic castles rise out of the mist, and springtime awakens the land!

We invite you to join artist Mindy Lacefield and the Wandering Crafters as we explore a world-famous garden, paint ourselves cozy, and hear the gentle sounds of newborn lambs in flower-strewn fields. If this feels like your kind of perfect adventure with a gathering of friends, then come join our merry alchemy of paint and whimsy.

APRIL 20-27, 2024

Workshops Included:

  • Enchanted Lands with Mindy Lacefield

    • Mindy's workshops are a playground of whimsy, and a safe space to just play and let loose with your art. She often starts her pages with what if moments, experiments, and a huge sense of curiosity, and invites you along for the joyride. She will lead you in workshops inspired by a Royal palace, dapper bunnies in a garden and all the magic of telling your travel adventure story in this most special corner of the land.

Join Mindy's deeper exploration into her magical world during art time in a lovely home with expansive views across a hidden valley, and on field trips that will inspire your story of this time and place.

  • Sketch Strolling & Watercolor with Jane Bumar

    • We'll go stravaiging (that's Scots for a wee casual wander) on the Undiscovered Royal Mile. In our wander, you'll learn tactile ways of creating a time machine for your mind. Jane shares her gentle urban sketching approach and helps you develop your own style.

Later, you'll have the opportunity to wander through the natural environment around the English Lake District with Jane, countryside journaling and recording your impressions of drystone walls, heritage-breed sheep, an ancient churchyard, and other classically English scenes.
